Sugar Glider Bonding Tips
By Tonia Johnson
*Cut some fleece squares I encourage new owners to sleep with a piece of fleece close to their skin for a couple of nights, or under a shirt all day long. After doing so, place fleece squares in the Sugar Glider pouches. This will allow the Sugar Glider to smell you the whole time it sleeps. Allowing the Sugar Glider to do this, will teach it that the smell of you is not a threat, and can find comfort with you.
*Carry your Sugar Glider with you during the day while it sleeps. A pouch that zips closed is highly recommended. You can easily take out your sleeping Sugar Glider (pouch & all) and simply place the pouch in your bonding pouch that Zips so not to cause stress!
If your Sugar Glider shows fear when you have them in their pouch (this will be shown by crabbing or lunging), it is advised to take the pouch and sit on the couch, placing the pouch in your lap or held against you. Sitting quietly, and gently rubbing the pouch. The whole time you are doing this, speak softly to your Sugar Glider. (Please remember that a crabbing or lunging Sugar Glider is NOT aggressive BUT scared!!)
* Each day, at the same time or as close to it as possible, follow the same procedure, making the time periods a bit longer each time. Time, consistency, Patience, and Routine will teach your Sugar Glider it is able to trust you.
* Feeding your Sugar Glider nightly should also be a set time as well!
*If your Sugar Glider happens to get out loose and runs from you, do NOT chase after it. This will cause a set back and fear! Try to offer its pouch to it, if it will not go into the pouch,Try Treats, lastly try a towel or blanket covering lightly over your glider to scoop up, the glider does not see you and therefore will not associate you in a *chase and catch* situation
Sugar Gliders
Sugar gliders are a popular exotic pet due in part to their small size and cute, yet unusual, appearance. As with any other exotic pet, a potential owner should be aware of the care requirements and personality traits of sugar gliders before acquiring one..
Where Can I Buy A Sugar Glider?
Whatever you do PLEASE do not
purchase a sugar glider from a flea
market, Store, Fair, & Auction. These gliders come from glider
mills where there is a high risk that they were raised
in poor conditions, taken away from their
parents at a young age, imbred, and then sold to others without
giving the new owner correct instructions on proper glider care.
There are many reputable glider breeders in the U.S.
You can search the internet for breeders in your area.
Be sure the glider you purchase has lineage!
Simply ask the breeder if the glider you wish to purchase has lineage
& if the glider is listed on The Pet Glider Online Pedigree Program
at www.thepetglider.com This insures the sugar glider has not been imbred.
A reputable breeder should help you in every aspect of your glider
ownership and answer any questions you may have.
Their best interest should be for their gliders

"Tonia is very researched when it comes to gliders! When I was first starting out she was so helpful in answering questions and giving support. It was clear to me that she is very dedicated to gliders, and her suggies have the cutest toys! I drove all the way from Huntsville to see her and was so glad I did!"
